CIVIT receives funding to help drive innovation in imaging tech

CIVIT has received funding from Business Finland to launch new services targeted for companies involved in the innovation clusters of imaging companies and intelligent work machines. Centre aims at developing new test, experimentation, and visual data creation and curation services to fertilize building a wide research and innovation environment for developers and users of innovative imaging technologies.

Creating an infrastructure offering up-to-date equipment and understanding

Industrial R&D projects with tight schedules and high expectations have classically suffered from long lead times for purchasing equipment. Getting up to speed on how to use specialized equipment has a significant ramp-up time and requires versatile expertise. CIVIT undertakes the ambitious project to create an infrastructure offering up-to-date equipment with the understanding of how to use it. This will enable, both cost and schedule-wise, the kind of rapid prototyping of various alternative approaches with real world equipment often needed in industry driven projects and product development.

Services for emerging imaging technologies

CIVIT will develop test and experimentation services for quantifying the spectral performance of imaging sensors. It will also set facilities for creating and curating versatile visual datasets for the needs of training machine learning models. The activities will also include networking through interest groups and organizing seminars where developers and users of innovative imaging technologies and solutions meet and innovate.

The planned testing and experimentation services will include:

  • Spectral Response Measurements of Digital Sensors: CIVIT will procure and install new equipment for the spectral measurements system, including high-end monochromator and integrating spheres, develop the needed hardware and software test environment, train engineers to interface sensors to be tested, run the measurements and analyse the test data.
  • Image Quality Assessment: CIVIT aims at building a VCX Trusted Laboratory for objectively assessing the image quality of cameras in various devices such as smartphones.
  • Eye Safety Measurement Equipment: CIVIT will work with the corresponding interest group for identifying the issues and procuring and setting the measurement equipment and establishing the measurement service.
  • Profiling of Technologies: By profiling emerging imaging technologies, centre aims at finding topics where new co-creation projects can be built.

CIVIT also aims at forming a streamlined, end-to-end service for creating and accessing large visual datasets, mainly for the needs of ML/DL model training but also for other possible uses.

Tools to compete in the data-driven global markets

The infrastructure will have an impact on the innovation activity through strengthening the cooperation between academic research, innovative clusters of imaging tech developers, end users and students. Companies, specifically SMEs, get access to world-class development environments for accelerating their RDI activities. New services and knowledge can lead to an increase in business opportunities. Furthermore with the project, CIVIT will provide the local ecosystems with tools to compete more fairly in the data-driven global markets.
