Visit CIVIT During ICIP 2026

The Centre for Immersive Visual Technologies (CIVIT) will open its doors to visitors during the 2026 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP) on 17 September at Tampere University!

Join one of our lab visits to discover our equipment, meet our team, and explore potential opportunities for collaboration. 

Through our demonstrations, you will have the opportunity to explore a virtual forest using the Omnideck, step inside our volumetric capture studio, and discover the future of display technologies in our display studio. You will also learn about our advanced systems for image quality assessment and accurate spectral response measurement.

We will host two visits:

Demo Introductions

Super Multi-View Displays

  • Conventional 3D displays recreate a limited number of perspective views. In contrast, a super multi-view display recreates a light field with continuous parallax, enabling users to explore a 3D scene from arbitrary viewing positions within the display’s viewing zone. The demo showcases several 3D displays and various content.

Remote Operation of Mobile Work Machine

  • The visitors can teleoperate a mobile work machine from CIVIT. A movement platform with a seat, pedals, steering wheel and curved display is used to control a wheel loader equipped with cameras. The movement platform and wheel loader communicate via 5G to enable low-latency operation.

Omnidirectional Treadmill

  • The omnidirectional treadmill allows users to move and explore a virtual forest by walking on a 360-degree platform. This increases the immersiveness of the virtual reality experience compared to other movement approaches such as using a hand-held controller.

Volumetric Capture Studio

  • The volumetric capture studio produces a photorealistic 3D visual representation of a person. The resulting 3D model can be viewed from any direction and used in various applications such as virtual reality, artistic performances, education, and training.

Calibration of LF display

  • Light field (LF) displays provide a dense set of directional rays capable of triggering an accommodative response of the human eye. However, due to the high number of perspective views, their alignment and calibration are a challenging problem. This demonstration presents our ongoing research on LF display calibration and its effect on the LF imagery.

Image Quality Assessment System

  • In collaboration with DXOMARK, CIVIT offers comprehensive image quality evaluation including MTF, dynamic range, texture preservation, and color fidelity measurements. This demonstration showcases the available equipment and possible use cases ranging from smartphone cameras to automotive imaging.

Spectral Response Measurement System

  • Spectral response measurements of imaging sensors provide valuable information for accurate color reproduction, sensor optimization and quality control. This demonstration presents CIVIT’s spectral response measurement system providing uniform illumination at 350 nm to 1300 nm for cameras with a field of view up to 170°.

Parking and Arriving: Hervanta Campus is about 7 kilometres from Tampere city centre. Several buses and tram number 3 drive between the City Centre and Hervanta. Visitors may also park their cars in the car parks that are located next to and in front of the parking garage as well as in the parking garage in Korkeakoulunkatu.
